Bowel Cancer West supports first-class training for local nurses
Local charity Bowel Cancer West (BCW) is helping 30 south west nurses receive a day of high-quality education, enabling them to support bowel cancer patients with the best possible care.
The course will be delivered by ‘Knowledge4Nurses’ under the banner of the national Perioperative Medicine Programme of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and funded by Bowel Cancer West which dedicates its services to increasing survival rates of bowel cancer by raising awareness and committing to research and training in the south west.
Leading the day will be a group of expert clinicians, hand-picked to ensure that learning is innovative and interactive so that information can be transferred easily into clinical practice. They will focus mainly on care for patients prior to operation and topics will range from- ‘understanding a blood result’ and ‘anticoagulation’ (to prevent blood clots that may lead to heart failure) as well as a case study relating to a colorectal patient.
Lead Pre-Assessment Sister Emma McCone, who established Knoweledge4Nurses, said:
“We always receive great feedback from the course and it’s an enjoyable day for the nurses. It is very satisfying to know we have contributed directly to the support they will give to patients. I’m so glad we can run this in the south west for the first time and a particular thanks to Bowel Cancer West for supporting this day and to Derriford Hospital for hosting us.”

The south west is one of the best places to be treated for bowel cancer, but with incidences of the disease alarmingly high, we must maintain that level of support. The course has a fantastic reputation across the UK and we are delighted to have them here in the west country.”
Coinciding with bowel cancer awareness month in April, the training will take place on Thursday 27 April at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. The charity is planning to roll out a series of these days across multiple hospitals in the region as well as commit to further research and continue to raise awareness of bowel cancer during the next year.
