Champion Car Rally Surgeon Racing for BCW!

A Truro-based four-person team, led by Royal Cornwall Hospital colorectal surgeon Paul Lidder, is raising funds for regional charity Bowel Cancer West by competing in a car rally across France, Switzerland and Italy between Friday 9th and Sunday 11th June 2017.

Seeking to defend the title they won last year at the same event, Paul’s team will race 79 other vehicles over the three-days in a custom-fitted ‘Fabrari’, a Skoda Fabia converted to resemble a Ferrari.

Ahead of the team’s departure for France on Wednesday 7th June, Paul said: “We’re delighted to be taking part in this event for the second year running and of course we’re determined to retain our title. It is also a privilege to be raising funds for an important local charity, Bowel Cancer West so that they can carry out more research into colorectal cancer, as well as provide additional training for GP’s and nurses.”

Bowel cancer affects people of all ages but is most commonly associated with people over the age of 55. It is Britain’s second biggest cancer killer but only ranks fourth for cancer diagnosis. Currently, one in three people know someone with bowel cancer.

Paul continued: “Bowel Cancer can be cured in over 90% of cases if caught early and that is a vital message that Bowel Cancer West are working hard to convey to the public. Taking part in this rally provides a great platform for raising greater awareness about a cancer that demands a higher profile.”

Organised by the Crumball Rally Company, ‘The Italian Job 2017’ is an annual race from Reims to Nice in France for vehicles with a maximum value of £200 or engine capacity of 2500cc. With stops in Besançon, France and Turin, Italy, the route passes through the Swiss mountains and Lake Geneva in Switzerland.
