Bowel Cancer West awards grant to two research projects

Bowel Cancer West, has awarded two research projects with the inaugural David Darke Research Grant, which was named after David Darke, Patron of the Charity.

Siobhan Creanor from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Plymouth and Matt Wiggans, Research Fellow, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Derriford Hospital and Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry, were the successful recipients of the prestigious grant which supports research projects that have great potential in improving the care of patients with bowel cancer in the region and nationally.

Creanor’s research will focus on identifying which patients are at higher risk of developing complications after major operations for bowel cancer, and Wiggans’ research will explore whether people who are affluent have a better outcome than patients who come from less privileged backgrounds, once bowel cancer has spread to the liver.

Both projects are part of the comprehensive high quality clinical research program carried out at the Plymouth site of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Bowel Cancer West Founding Director, Mark Coleman commented:

“Bowel Cancer West is delighted to support work of this calibre. Using data in this way to look carefully at the results of the surgery we do is a very positive step.

“We are extremely grateful for the countless donations and fund raising efforts of local people and very pleased to be able to put that money into initiatives such as this, which will directly improve the quality of care that patients with bowel cancer receive, both in the West Country and across the UK.”

Bowel Cancer West was established in 2010 with the aim of providing support and training to Doctors and Nurses that look after bowel cancer patients, and to fund clinical research into bowel cancer in the West Country.
